According to the Chicago Tribune, the Illinois Senate recently voted to increase personal income taxes by 67% and they are considering expanding taxes on service like cable television. This year alone the City of Chicago, Cook County and the State of Illinois have all voted to increase taxes in one way or another. Yikes! When does it end? When does the government stop turning to tax increases to solve their fiscal problems (instead of operating more efficiently)? Better yet, when will Illinois resistents stop putting these people in positions of power?

Today Alderman Arenda Troutman was sentenced to four years in prison for mail and tax fraud, and Senator Roland Burris admitted he was actively seeking to help Governor Rod Blagojevich raise money while working to replace former Barak Obama in the Senate.
Unbelieveable! Hollywood couldn’t make this stuff up.

After exhausting nearly every conceivable means to generate new income for the city – including increasing sales tax, property tax, train/bus fares, bottled water tax, gas tax, parking fees, parking fines – it looks like Daley has finally decided to actually cutback on municipal spending. Kuddos to him! Now, if only he could get a few of the city’s licensing offices to operate more efficiently, I’m sure he’d have the deficit straightened out in no time at all.
